For nearly two decades, Eamonn Horgan has been part of ASM Group's growth story. Having joined the business in 2006, he has built his career by embracing new challenges, developing his leadership skills, and gaining experience across every area of the organisation.
Today, as Director of ASM Group, Eamonn plays a key role in shaping the business's future while supporting clients, colleagues, and long-term growth.
Building the Foundations
Before joining ASM Group, Eamonn began his career as a Safety Officer, developing practical experience in workplace health and safety and gaining first-hand insight into the challenges faced by organisations across the construction sector.
Alongside his early career development, he invested heavily in his professional qualifications, completing a Master of Science (MSc) in Occupational Health & Safety at University College Cork and becoming a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH).
"Those early years gave me a strong technical foundation and helped me understand the importance of balancing compliance, safety and practical business needs."
When Eamonn joined ASM Group in 2006, he saw an opportunity to continue developing his expertise while working closely with clients across a wide range of industries.
Building a Career Through Experience
Since joining ASM Group in 2006 as a Senior EHS Consultant, Eamonn has progressed through several leadership roles, including Head of Business Operations, Associate Director and, ultimately, Director.
Over nearly 20 years with the business, he has worked across all aspects of the organisation, developing a deep understanding of both operations and client requirements.
"Working in a fast-paced consultancy environment gave me valuable experience in leadership, problem-solving and building long-term client relationships," he explains.
Throughout his career, Eamonn has developed strengths in relationship management, commercial leadership and decision-making under pressure.
"Working closely with clients and colleagues over many years taught me the importance of trust, consistency and clear communication."
What initially attracted him to the sector was the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
"I was drawn to the chance to help clients create safer working environments and support them in meeting important compliance requirements."
A New Chapter
In 2024, ASM Group became part of Phenna Group, creating new opportunities for the business and its people.
At that time, Eamonn stepped into the role of Director on ASM's senior leadership team.
"The transition created an opportunity to broaden my perspective and take on new responsibilities. Working closely with colleagues across the wider Compliance & Certification Division and Phenna Group has given me valuable insight into different approaches, experiences and ways of thinking."
Having access to a wider network of expertise and support has helped Eamonn continue to develop as a leader while contributing to ASM's future growth.
Leading Growth
Today, Eamonn's role spans business operations, strategic planning, business development and leadership.
"My focus now goes beyond day-to-day operations. A key part of my role is helping shape the future direction of the business while ensuring we continue delivering excellent service to our clients and supporting our people."
Being part of Phenna Group provided access to experienced leaders and specialist expertise across the wider organisation. Through collaboration with divisional and Group colleagues, Eamonn and the ASM team have shared best practices, strengthened strategic planning, and continued building for the future.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Eamonn's role is working alongside colleagues to achieve shared goals.
"I enjoy working with our management team and staff, while also collaborating with the wider divisional leadership team. Being part of a successful business that continues to grow is incredibly rewarding."
Looking back, Eamonn is particularly proud of the role he has played in ASM's development over the last 20 years.
"Stepping into the Director role during a significant period of change for the business was a proud moment, but I'm equally proud of the relationships we've built and the progress we've achieved together over the years."
Advice for Career Growth
Eamonn believes that having access to experienced colleagues and leaders, both within ASM and across the wider group, has been an important part of his own development.
"I'd describe the culture as collaborative, supportive, and growth-focused. There is a strong emphasis on developing people, sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for progression."
When asked what advice he would give to others looking to progress their careers, Eamonn's answer is straightforward.
"Be open to learning, take on challenges and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Broadening your experience is one of the best ways to develop professionally."
He also believes patience is an important part of any career journey.
"Career progression doesn't always happen overnight. Take opportunities when they arise, learn from every experience and continue building your knowledge across different areas of the business."
If he could give his younger self one piece of advice, it would be simple:
"Trust the process and be patient. Take every opportunity to broaden your experience and look for opportunities that give you exposure to different parts of the business."
Life Outside Work
Outside of work, Eamonn enjoys spending time outdoors, gardening, golfing and keeping fit.
"These activities help me switch off, recharge and maintain a good balance. Family is also a big part of life outside work. I have a 15-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter who certainly keep me busy, so there's never a dull moment."
A keen gardener, Eamonn particularly enjoys seeing the results of patience and long-term effort.
"I enjoy watching how a garden develops and changes through the seasons. It's a great way to switch off and focus on something completely different."
Eamonn's story demonstrates how experience, continuous learning and a willingness to embrace new opportunities can help build a rewarding and long-lasting career.
From joining ASM Group in 2006 to becoming Director nearly 20 years later, his journey highlights the value of growth, commitment and strong relationships. It also shows how the right support, trusted colleagues, and opportunities to develop can help people continue to progress throughout their careers.
