Phenna Group businesses are working side by side to support the UK’s transition to a greener and more resilient energy network, playing a significant role in some of the country’s most critical infrastructure upgrades.

CGL Energy Project

CGL, one of Phenna’s specialist geotechnical and geoenvironmental consultancies, is currently leading efforts on several nationally significant energy transmission projects in Scotland and across England and Wales. These projects form part of the UK’s ‘Pathway to 2030’ – a blueprint for enabling the growth of renewable electricity and meeting Net Zero targets.

Cross Company Collaboration

What makes this work particularly notable is the high level of cross-company collaboration within Phenna Group. CGL has engaged sister companies Ecology Solutions, XAIS-PTS, In Situ Site Investigation and GSTL to deliver complementary services that enhance overall project delivery. From geotechnical laboratory testing and ecological assessments to highway investigations and structural surveys, Phenna companies are working in unison to ensure that these complex and demanding infrastructure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

Phil Marshall, CEO of Phenna Group, commented: “One of the key benefits of joining Phenna Group is the opportunity to collaborate across our specialist businesses. We actively encourage and support our companies to work together, maximising commercial opportunities and delivering integrated solutions to our clients. This collaborative ethos not only improves service delivery but also helps us operate more sustainably, by using resources more efficiently and drawing on shared expertise.”

In the Scottish Highlands, CGL teams are undertaking some of the most significant linear ground investigations in the company’s history, as part of the Beauly to Blackhillock and Isle of Skye reinforcement schemes. These challenging environments require not just technical expertise but seamless coordination between teams and supply chains. Ecology Solutions, also part of the Phenna family, has played a crucial role in providing environmental support to the Isle of Skye project. At the same time, other businesses within the group are involved in specialist highway investigations and baseline condition surveys.

As activity accelerates across England and Wales, this collaborative model continues to prove its value. CGL is advancing critical schemes such as the Bramford to Twinstead overhead line and urban infrastructure upgrades in North London. Looking ahead, multiple Phenna businesses are supporting works near North and South Hinksey, delivering packages that include drone surveys, structural assessments, and extensive laboratory testing.

Stuart Abbs, Divisional Managing Director for Infrastructure at Phenna Group, added: “Collaboration is a fundamental part of how our Infrastructure division operates. The ability to draw on a broad range of technical capabilities within the group allows us to offer a truly joined-up service to clients. It’s a major factor in the success of these large-scale projects and strengthens our reputation as a trusted delivery partner in the infrastructure sector.”

Integrated Delivery

This model of integrated delivery, drawing on the strengths of multiple specialist companies within Phenna Group, is a key part of the Group’s value proposition. It allows clients to benefit from a wide range of capabilities through a single, coordinated team, providing cost-effective and time-efficient solutions to the UK’s most pressing infrastructure needs.

These projects not only support the nation’s transition to renewable energy but also reflect the power of collaboration across the Phenna Group. By working together, Phenna companies are helping to build a more sustainable future while demonstrating the strength and agility of a unified group approach.
