Phenna Group

As part of our Meet the Expert series, we are delighted to spotlight team members from across Phenna Group who bring deep expertise, innovation, and passion to their work. Today, we introduce Mark Cornell, President of Hansen Aerospace.

In the world of aerospace testing, precision, reliability, and trust are essential. Few people embody those qualities more than Mark Cornell, President of Hansen Aerospace, LLC. From his early days in the United States Army to his leadership of one of the most respected non-destructive testing laboratories in the industry, Mark brings a blend of discipline, technical knowledge, and hands-on leadership that has shaped the company's trajectory and strengthened its reputation across the global aerospace sector.

A Journey Built on Experience and Continuous Learning

Mark's path into his profession began after military service, when he used his GI Bill to pursue a degree in Welding and Joining. That foundation introduced him to the science of metal strength and led to his first role in destructive testing within the oil and gas industry. Over twelve years, he developed a deep understanding of testing methodology and quality standards before transitioning into aerospace. That new direction led him to the D'Orio family at Hansen Aerospace Laboratories, where he joined in 2015.

In addition to technical training, Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in International Business. He credits ongoing education with being critical to professional growth and encourages others to pursue knowledge and remain committed to excellence. Today, he oversees all aspects of Hansen Aerospace's operations and takes pride in leading by example. Whether supporting his team or ensuring customer needs are met, Mark is directly involved in the company's day-to-day performance.

Technical Expertise that Drives Excellence

With core expertise in both destructive and non-destructive testing, Mark approaches the discipline from both scientific and practical perspectives. While education laid the foundation, hands-on experience and mentorship from industry veterans played a significant role in shaping his capabilities.

He is energised by innovation across the aerospace landscape, particularly advancements related to safety and sustainability. Mark believes that passengers and manufacturers alike will benefit from the industry's commitment to next-generation technologies and greener systems.

In 2024, Hansen Aerospace achieved a major milestone when Airbus sought support in resolving a significant product backlog. The Hansen team not only eliminated the backlog but delivered results that exceeded expectations. Their work earned recognition from Airbus, including an upcoming performance award. For Mark, the achievement represents collaboration at its best and highlights the company's commitment to customer success.

About Hansen Aerospace

With over four decades of experience, Hansen Aerospace is a global leader in non-destructive testing services. The company provides a comprehensive menu of NDT methods, including ultrasonic testing, braze and blade inspection, fluorescent penetrant inspection, magnetic particle testing, specialised painting and dry film coatings, chemical etching, visual inspection, and metallographic testing. Hansen is the largest independently owned immersion testing facility in the world, supported by 43 immersion systems and a state-of-the-art macro etch line.

Customers worldwide rely on Hansen Aerospace's expertise, integrity, and consistency. The aerospace industry remains the company's largest market, and its reputation for service quality continues to attract customers seeking reliability and high-performance standards.

Collaboration and the Phenna Group Advantage

Since joining Phenna Group, Hansen Aerospace has continued to operate independently while tapping into shared strengths across the broader organisation. Mark values Phenna's trust and minimal interference, which allows Hansen Aerospace to maintain strong customer relationships and internal momentum.

Hansen has collaborated with several partners within the Group, including TDF Metal Finishing. This partnership expanded service offerings and created cross-company value. Mark anticipates additional collaborations as Phenna continues to grow and integrate new businesses. Each addition strengthens Hansen Aerospaces' position and supports its goal of becoming a true one-stop solution for aerospace testing needs.

Looking to the Future

Mark shared that he sees artificial intelligence and robotics as two major forces shaping the future of NDT. Both enhance consistency, accelerate decision-making, and strengthen inspection quality. As real-time data becomes more accessible, facilities will be better equipped to manage workflow and improve output efficiency.

He is also encouraged by growth across both commercial and military aerospace sectors. Since joining Phenna Group, Hansen Aerospace has significantly expanded capacity, adding more ultrasonic systems and new testing lines to meet increasing demand. Mark is optimistic about the opportunities ahead and confident that the company is positioned for continued success.

The Personal Side of Leadership

Despite a busy schedule, Mark remains passionate about his work. He takes pride in arriving early, greeting employees, collaborating with customers, and contributing to continuous improvement. Outside of work, he enjoys running and plans to compete in his fourth half-marathon in November 2025.

A lesser-known fact. His first job was at McDonald's, where he earned employee of the month twice and received a 5-cent raise and a free movie rental each time. It is a lighthearted reminder of his work ethic and dedication from the very beginning.

Mark Cornell's story reflects a blend of discipline, ambition, and genuine commitment to people. His leadership at Hansen Aerospace has helped shape a company known for its excellence and its ability to rise to customer challenges. As the aerospace industry evolves, Mark and his team remain focused on innovation, partnerships, and carrying forward the high standards that define Hansen Aerospace today.
