From construction sites to boardrooms, John Kidney's journey has always been driven by one thing. Keeping people safe. His path into health and safety wasn't a straight line; it was a calling that emerged from real-world experience on the tools and a determination to make a difference.
From the Ground Up
John began his career as a construction worker, where he developed an instinct for protecting those around him. "I always had a keen interest in ensuring safety was the priority," he recalls. That instinct evolved into action when he completed his Level 5 Basic Health & Safety qualification. This move soon saw him step into a full-time safety role at the encouragement of his employer.
Today, John serves as Associate Director at ASM Group, where he manages an extensive portfolio of projects, supports his team, and works closely with clients to develop strong, safety-focused relationships. It's a role that keeps him on the move, meeting people, solving problems, and continuously looking for ways to raise the standard of health and safety performance across industries.
Experience That Matters
Having spent time on both sides of the fence, as a site operative and a senior safety professional, John understands the realities of high-pressure work environments. That empathy is one of his greatest strengths.
"My technical expertise comes from managing and safely completing complex, large-scale projects," he explains. "But my real advantage is understanding the mindset of the workforce. Human factors play an enormous role in safety, and that understanding makes all the difference."
One recent highlight was overseeing the Dairygold Casein Dryer Project, which achieved an impressive 273,000 accident-free hours, a milestone that reflects ASM Group's uncompromising commitment to excellence and safety culture.
Championing Wellbeing in Construction
While John has seen the industry evolve over the years, one issue continues to weigh on his mind: mental health. "Mental health challenges in construction are continually on the rise," he says. "Stress, anxiety, depression, and job insecurity can all lead to dangerous practices on-site. It's an area I'm passionate about addressing."
His goal is to help break down the stigma, open up conversations, and encourage a culture where workers feel supported, not just physically safe, but mentally well. It's a mission that aligns closely with ASM Group's holistic approach to safety and well-being.
About ASM Group

Founded in 2003, ASM Group has grown into one of Ireland's leading independent health and safety consultancies. The firm offers a comprehensive range of services across various sectors, including construction, pharmaceuticals, and bespoke training and compliance support.
"Our strength lies in our people," John notes proudly. "We only hire those who are competent and passionate about what they do. That passion translates directly into the quality of service we deliver."
ASM Group's focus on trust, consistency, and long-term relationships has earned them a reputation for reliability in the TICC (Testing, Inspection, Certification, and Compliance) landscape. "We don't just provide a service, we become a trusted safety partner," John says. “That's what sets us apart."
Strength in Collaboration
Since joining the Phenna Group, ASM has gained access to a broader network of like-minded companies offering complementary services. "Being part of Phenna allows us to resource the business more effectively and continue growing while maintaining our core principles," John explains.
Through collaboration with other Phenna companies, ASM has been able to deliver integrated consultancy solutions, thereby expanding both its capabilities and client value. "When we combine our expertise with that of others in the group, the client ultimately benefits; it's a win-win."
Looking Ahead
As the construction and compliance sectors continue to evolve, John is optimistic about the future. "What excites me most is the opportunity for ASM to keep growing and delivering high-quality services, supported by the strength of the wider Phenna Group."
Beyond the Office
Outside of work, John channels his energy and leadership into sport, particularly soccer. As head coach of his local Under-18 team, he finds parallels between coaching and his professional life. "It's all about teamwork, discipline, and helping people reach their potential," he says.
And a fun fact? "I was once friends with the late boxer Ricky Hatton, we even shared phone numbers and home addresses!". It's a reminder that behind every expert is a unique story, and John's is one built on passion, purpose, and a genuine care for people's safety.
At ASM Group, professionals like John Kidney embody the company's mission, combining deep technical knowledge with empathy, integrity, and a relentless commitment to keeping people safe. In an industry where trust is everything, leaders like John ensure that safety isn't just a priority, it's a culture.
