“No regrets. Just results.”

That’s how Chris Simmons, Managing Director of Simtec, sums up his experience since joining the Phenna Group, a decision that has transformed his business, sharpened his leadership, and unlocked a scale of growth once thought impossible.

About Simtec

Founded in 2007, Simtec Materials Testing has grown to become a trusted name in the construction and civil engineering sectors. Built on decades of industry experience, they are wholly committed to delivering high-quality materials testing services across the UK. From its UKAS accredited laboratory complex in the Midlands and with additional laboratories in Brandon and London, the company specialises in testing asphalt, aggregates, concrete, and earthworks, supporting both on-site and laboratory-based requirements.

Simtec serves a broad spectrum of industry sectors, offering services such as CBR and Plate Load testing, Diamond Core sampling, routine site investigations, and precision laboratory testing. All services are delivered by highly trained technicians producing results by electronic means to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Simtec holds Citation ISO 9001:2015 certification, Constructionline Gold membership, and Avetta accreditation for health and safety. Whether supporting major road and rail infrastructure or complex energy projects, Simtec continues to lead the way with cutting edge technologies and a team driven approach to quality and service.

A LEGACY MEETS ITS TURNING POINT

Chris had long seen Simtec as a legacy business, something he might eventually pass on to his three sons. But when a candid family conversation revealed they weren’t interested in taking the reins, “No thanks, it’s not for us,” they told him, Chris pivoted. It was time to look ahead, not just for succession, but for strategic evolution.

WHY PHENNA GROUP?

Though initially cautious, Chris found Phenna’s approach refreshingly sincere. A relaxed conversation over coffee with Paul Barry quickly laid the groundwork for something more serious.

“From the outset, the alignment was clear,” says Chris. “Phenna offered the chance to retain equity, maintain operational autonomy, and scale with serious backing. It felt like the right fit.”

Previous suitors left Chris unimpressed. “They didn’t approach things professionally. With Phenna, the tone was different, open, considered, and entrepreneurial.”

A CHALLENGING BUT WORTHWHILE PROCESS

The road to completion wasn’t without its hurdles. Chris managed due diligence himself while keeping day-to-day operations running, which was a strain. But the goal remained firmly in view.

The deal was signed in September 2022, just seven months after that first chat. “Yes, it was tough, but I never lost sight of what we could achieve together.”

LIFE AFTER ACQUISITION: THE PHENNA EFFECT

Phenna’s light-touch integration strategy meant the initial months post acquisition brought minimal disruption by design. But when Simtec absorbed Midlands CTS in mid-2023, it was a real test.

“That was a steep learning curve. There were bumps, but we turned a negative into a positive. In six months, we emerged stronger.”

REAL GROWTH, TANGIBLE RESULTS

Since joining Phenna Group:

  • EBITDA has grown by 2.5x
  • Revenue has doubled
  • Simtec ranked No. 2 in Phenna’s RO81* performance league (2024)
  • Climbed to No. 1 in RO94* in Q1 2025

Operationally, the business has gained breathing room. With Warwick Nuttall brought in as General Manager (on Stuart Abb’s advice, Divisional MD, Infrastructure), Chris could shift focus from firefighting to strategy.

New equipment, upgraded vehicles, and investment in two new locations have slashed maintenance costs and expanded Simtec’s market reach.

“Group support in HR, Marketing, Quality, and Health & Safety has been invaluable,” says Chris. “It’s not just resources; it’s having smart people to bounce ideas off.”

Being part of Phenna Group has also enabled Simtec to tender for and win larger-scale projects, thanks to the increased credibility and capacity that come with group backing. In addition, strategic investments in electric vehicles have strengthened their sustainability credentials, earning valuable points in tenders and significantly enhancing their CSR profile.

THE CULTURE FIT

One of the biggest positives? Cultural alignment. “There’s no micro management. The group encourages entrepreneurial spirit while providing structure when you need it,” says Chris. “It’s exactly the balance I was looking for.”

LOOKING AHEAD

Chris recently extended his contract with Phenna, affirming his confidence in the direction the group is heading.

“Working with Stuart Abb’s and the wider leadership team has been rewarding. This isn’t just about my business; it’s about being part of something larger that’s ambitious, forward-thinking, and built for long-term success.”

WORDS OF ADVICE TO OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS

Chris is candid about the ups and downs, especially during integration challenges, as they absorbed other businesses. But the overall verdict is clear.

“Growth without challenge doesn’t shape character. This journey has made me a better leader and my business far more resilient. If you’re considering joining Phenna, don’t hesitate to do so. Just be ready to grow.”

THINKING OF JOINING PHENNA GROUP?

Simtec’s story shows what’s possible when values align, ambition is met with investment, and legacy gives way to transformation. If you’re looking for more than just an exit and want to scale with purpose, Chris Simmons’ journey may be the blueprint.
