About Us:

About us

Austest Laboratories is Australia’s leading Environmental testing facility, providing comprehensive test and qualification services for defence, aerospace, rail, automotive, medical and other industries.

We are seeking a “switched-on” and motivated technician to join our engineering team working on vibration, shock, pressure, temperature, humidity, acoustics, and other forms of environmental testing.

Role Overview:

This role deals with the practical aspects of our testing projects, such as building test fixtures, setting up machines and assisting engineers in the execution of tests. The successful candidate will take ownership of a small mechanical workshop and be responsible for all aspects of its operation. Strong communication skills are absolutely essential as the role requires working closely with other team members, customers and external stakeholders.

Although very much a hands-on role, you will be working closely with engineers and expected to participate and contribute to technical discussions with your own ideas and solutions. So this position is best suited to a senior fitter or technician who can draw on their extensive practical experience across different engineering disciplines. You will be someone who takes pride in your work, enjoys a challenge and is able to turn ideas into reality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and fabrication of fixtures, jigs and customised testing solutions
  • Assembly, setup and dismantling of mechanical testing systems
  • Maintenance, repairs and upgrades of machines and equipment
  • General workshop duties, upkeep of tools, materials and consumables

Essential Requirements:

Essential skills:

  • High level of competency with mechanical/metalworking tools and equipment
  • Solid MIG welding skills (steel and aluminium)
  • Competency in basic machining operations (milling, drilling, turning)
  • Previous experience in troubleshooting and repair of machinery
  •  Attention to detail
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work from rough sketches and concept diagrams
  • Forklift licence

Highly regarded: (we’d love to see any of the following)

  • SolidWorks or similar CAD platform
  • Testing, R&D, prototyping or similar environments
  • Experience working in highly regulated industries such as defence, aviation, medical, etc.
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting
  • Factory automation and control systems
  • Electro-pneumatic systems

Benefits:

  • Work in an organisation that supports innovation and creativity
  • Contribute to diverse projects across cutting-edge industries
  • Hands-on role with autonomy and ownership
  • Growth opportunities within a supportive engineering team

How to Apply:

If you’re interested in this opportunity, please submit your CV along with a brief cover letter outlining your account management experience and why you believe you’d be a strong fit for this role.
